TRAN TRONG VU

Trân Trong Vũ is a Vietnamese painter who was born in 1964 in Hanoi (Vietnam). He has lived and worked in France since 1990.

His work is beyond aestheticism. It reflects the obsession of an ever-lasting past and of political and human derision. He paints on large sheets of transparent plastic and then installs them in spaces to create three-dimensional artworks.

His work encourages public participation and complicity or at least it’s acceptance to enter his artwork. Visitors will find their way through transparency and between images, shapes and colours… His work plays on visual and psychological effects caused by the image virtual maze…

2012 : Visiting professor at the Fine Art School of Vietnam.
2000 : Directed the workshop painting artist “La semaine folle”, Ecole Supérieure d’Art et de Design of Reims.
1989-1992 : Student guest, Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts of Paris.
1987-1989 : Drawing teacher, Fine Art School of Hanoi.
1982-1987 : Student, Fine Art School of Vietnam.

Is Trân Trong Vû the James Cameron of painting? One would think so from reading everywhere that the artist makes artwork in 3D. However, he doesn’t use new technology, and his approach to art comes closer to another filmmaker, Michel Gondry.
It’s top-level imagination, as he had the genius idea to make this 3D effect by simply painting on thin transparent plastic film. Simple, but one had to think of it. It gives a stunning staging effect and original interacting opportunities with the public.

  • First Prize, Biennale Austria 2006, Huettenberg.
